Climate Zones and Biomes Entry Point
For our topic entry point, Year 4 looked at some of the different types of climate zones and biomes around the world! We worked together to create a picture that represented some of the key words for our topic. We used coloured paper, sugar paper, crepe paper and tissue paper to create a collage that represented a climate zone or biome in the world. Then, we discussed what we saw in the picture and where in the world it might be.
Art Week – Jean-Michel Basquiat
Art Week November 2020
For this art week, we have focused on the impressive collections of art created by famous black artists. Year 4 chose to complete work inspired by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Basquiat was a Neo-Expressionist painter in the 1980s. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on the 22nd of December 1960 and died on the 12th of August 1988. Basquiat produced a lot of self-portraits and his work contained a mixture of words, symbols, stick figures and animals. He used bold colours in his work using a range of materials such as oil-stick, acrylic and spray paint and he worked on giant canvases.
Day 1 – Artist Research
We researched our artist and created information posters with facts about him and his artwork. We found out about his heritage, how he began his career, his artistic style and how he made a living. Day 2 – Responding to Art
We looked at a variety of his artwork and thought about what we could see, the colours that were used, how we would describe it and why we thought he painted it. We focused on small parts of the pictures and copied what we saw.
Day 3 – Animals
We explored how Jean-Michel Basquiat would draw animals. We looked at creating artwork with bright and bold colours and included some of Basquiat’s style e.g. crowns, bones, lines and words.
Day 4 – Skulls
We looked at one of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s most famous paintings. In May 2017, a Japanese billionaire bought “Untitled” for 110.5 million. This sale was the highest priced Basquiat painting, and most expensive artwork to be sold by a black artist.
We explored how Jean-Michel Basquiat would portray skulls and faces and experimented by creating our own using oil pastels.
Day 5 – Plan/Create the Final Piece
Jean-Michel would like to create self-portraits or draw humans. We planned out the colours and design before using paint and oil pastels to create our final piece. We then evaluated our work and thought about what we liked and what we would change next time.
World Science Day 2020
World Science Day 2020
Celebrated every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.
We began the day with a live chat with Dr Fiona Lewis, a lecturer and researcher in myocardial repair and regeneration, who told us about her stem cell research to help with cardiovascular disease. She explained what qualifications that she needed to get, why she had chosen this career and the different things she needs to do day to day. The children were able to ask Fiona any questions they had and we looked at pictures of her lab. We then wrote Fiona some letters to say thank you for her time and ask her any further questions that we had.
The Sneeze Zone
How far can a sneeze travel and how can we prevent others from getting ill? Through this fun activity we learnt more about the spread of microbes and their potential to infect people. We measured the distance and impact of a sneeze by using water in a spray bottle. First, we stuck pieces of flip chart paper together to create a sneeze zone. Everyone drew a face on sugar paper and placed it anywhere in the sneeze zone. We stood at one end of the sneeze zone and used the “nose” (water sprayer) to sneeze twice. We then looked at how far the sneeze had travelled and how many people had been affected by the sneeze. We then repeated this but put a tissue in front of the “nose”. We looked at the problems with just using a hand to protect others from sneezes and considered the best ways to stop sneezes spreading.

In our next experiment, we created our own rainbow patterns in milk using food colouring. We made predictions and explored what we thought would happen certain colours mixed and used our observations skills to watch what was happening.
So what is the science behind it? Well, milk is made up of water, vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats. When the washing-up liquid is added two things happen. First, the washing-up liquid lowers the surface tension of the milk so that the food colouring is free to flow throughout the milk. Second, the washing-up liquid makes the fats and proteins in the milk spread out. This happens very quickly, causing the liquid to swirl. The food colouring molecules bump together, letting us see the activity of the milk.

Year 4 have been learning about the Romans this term. We learnt about what invading and settling means, why and how the Romans invaded Britain, the Celt way of life in Britain, who Boudica was and what happened in her revolt, what Roman life and how the Romans influenced our lives today.
To end our topic, we dressed up as Roman citizens, gladiators, emperors and gods for a day.
We completed a quiz based on everything we had learnt and played a board game about the Celts.

Year 4 have been learning about Hindu worship at home and in the Mandir.
We learnt about the important aspects of Hindu beliefs in God, the different Hindu gods and goddesses, why a shrine is a special place, why Puja is important and how it is practised at home and what worship in the Mandir looks like.
We made Diva lamps out of plasticine and decorative items.
This term, Year 4 have been exploring the wonders of the brain.
We have looked at the different parts of the brain, how it controls things like our senses and memory and how we need to learn and practise skills to keep our connections strong. We explored how positive thinking and a growth mindset can have a positive impact on our learning.
We loved looking at optical illusions to see the tricks our brain could play on our sight. At the end of our unit, we made 3D glasses and looked at 3D images and went on a 3D rollercoaster ride.
