  • Lockdown Learner of the Week

It has been a great first week back from half term and  we have lots of fantastic work to celebrate.

Here are the Lockdown Learners of the week.

Keep up all the fantastic work! Only one more week to go until we are back in our classrooms!

  • Home Learning Spring Term

Year 6 have been amazing with their home learning this term. They have demonstrated their ability to work independently, problem solve and develop skills of perseverance with their learning.  Thank you to everyone involved in keeping the learning going – you’ve all been incredible!

Our World War Two topic focused on the events that led to World war Two as well as a key focus on evacuees and the use of propaganda.

In English, we followed the story of Lenny,  an evacuee who lived through the Blitz. His father gave him a badge featuring a lion representing bravery and a unicorn for courage.

We also became news reporters and found out about events that happened in London Colney during World War Two. Did you know a German spy was found in London Colney ? We also reported on unexploded grenades, war memorials and evacuees from London Colney.

Our science topic this term has been electricity and we have learned all about circuits and how circuits provides a path that carries an electrical current. Some materials do not allow electricity to pass through them, whilst others do.  We learnt they are called insulators and conductors.

During our non screen times, we have been busy learning new skills. We have also been thinking about how to stay safe online. Have a look at our impressive artwork!

  • Dolphins’ Dive Into their Lockdown Learning!

This half term, pupils in Year 2 (both at school as part of a bubble or those working at home) have dived into their lockdown learning. They have worked with determination and enthusiasm over the past 6 weeks and have produced some incredible work based on our learning focuses.

In English this half term, we have been focusing on the story ‘Man on the Moon’ by Simon Bartram. Year 2 explored the story Bob and his job on the moon. The children developed their reading, writing and speaking and listening skills, working towards retelling the story. Year 2 really enjoyed this book and we found the mischievous aliens funny!

In Maths this half term, we have developed our skills, both in being able to tell the time and with adding and subtracting. Year 2 began the half term with learning to tell the time using an analogue clock, including reading the time to o’clock, half past, quarter past, quarter to and to 5 minute intervals. We then moved onto developing our addition and subtraction skills, exploring number bonds to 10 and 20 and adding and subtracting numbers within 20. We also were learning to use facts that we know to derive related ones.

In our topic work, we were learning about the significant person – Neil Armstrong. We explored his life and the famous moon landing he was apart of. We linked our learning to our English text and researched the moon. We also linked our DT work on vehicles and learned about the different parts of a vehicle, including the axles, chassis, washers and body, resulting in us designing and making our own space buggies.

In our science this half term, we were continuing to learn about animals including humans. We learned about what animals and humans needed to survive and how they change as they grow. We also explored how an animals environment can support their survival.

  • What a great term of Home Learning in the Starfish class!

The Starfish class have all had a fantastic term! Everyone has been working extremely hard at home to complete all of their learning and have done a brilliant job. I am so proud of you all, and a big thank you to all of our parents and carers too! A big well done to everyone!

This term our topic has been the Anglo Saxons, we have learned all about what their lives were like, where they lived, what jewellery they wore. Some of our activities have included designing and making our own brooches, baking oat cakes and replicating their houses.

In English we have been reading the book The View by Shaun Tan and Gary Crew. We have all enjoyed the story and its mysterious happenings. The children have created poems about the city dump, written their own endings to the story, created their own viewers for important moments in their lives over the last 10 years and written news reports about the sudden disappearance of Tristan.

In Maths we have started learning about fractions! Year 5 have really been up for some fraction action, and have done a superb job at home using loads of resources to help with their learning.

We also learned to express ourselves last week during Children’s Mental Health week. Everyday we shared an assembly and discussions, practiced some mindful activities and learned to express ourselves in different ways. Some things we got up to included taking photos, going on a walk, baking, playing a board game, drawing and painting.

Our Science topic this term has been properties of materials, and we have learned all about how some materials can dissolve, some can be removed from solutions, the difference between reversible and irreversible changes, and that these changes can be caused by heating, cooling or burning.
